Christians taught English to Immigrants
"English as a Second Language" (ESL) programs that were often organized by various Christian churches and organizations during the 1970s to 1990s. The Bible was continually used as a teaching tool beyond the 1990s and still is today.
One notable example is the "English Language Learners" (ELL) programs that utilized the Bible as a teaching tool. These programs aimed to help immigrants and non-native speakers improve their English skills while also introducing them to Christian teachings and values.
Many churches and Christian organizations offered these programs as a way to serve their communities, providing not only language instruction but also social support and integration for immigrants. The Bible was often used as a text because it is a familiar and culturally significant book for many Christian immigrants, making it a useful resource for language learning.
There wasn't a single, unified program that encompassed all these efforts.
These programs have evolved and adapted to meet the needs of immigrant communities, often incorporating modern teaching methods and materials while still using biblical texts for language instruction.
In recent years, some programs have also embraced technology, offering online classes and resources to reach a broader audience. Overall, the commitment to helping immigrants learn English through Christian teachings has persisted well into the 21st century.
Many Churches and their Associations collaborate with one another to share resources, teachers, to implement and run ESL programs.
The courses include:
• Bible Study Classes: Churches can offer ESL classes that incorporate Bible study, allowing learners to improve their language skills while engaging with Scripture. This can include reading passages, discussing themes, and learning vocabulary in context.
• Conversation Groups: Informal conversation groups can be organized where participants discuss Bible stories or themes, helping them practice speaking and listening skills.
It is also a ministry dedicated to sharing the Gospel with everyone attending, so they can come to Jesus for salvation and new life.
Your church can start this ministry if it's not associated with a church that does.
Let's help this new Generation who not only cant read but lacks basic social skills. [And any legal immigrants you know or meet to help them assimilste into our culture and nation].
NAMB and the National Literacy Missions Partnership work together to produce training material to get you started. This will get you in contact with someone from your state who will train you to reach the internationals in your city by teaching them English.
