Don't know much about the Bible, want to be in church & raise kids to know God

Q: This is embarrassing to admit , but I need advice! I don’t know where to start when it comes to getting closer to God. I didn’t really grow up in a religious household. I only attended church once and that we with a friend I was spending the night at her house in 4th grade and went to church with her. I barely remember it all I remember is playing with kids that’s it. We weren’t taught anything from my parents , it was just oh we believe in God but that’s it.

I grew up in a very angry household. We were told to believe in God but the household itself was so angry. Yelling, cussing, called a bible thumper or Jesus freak when I’d ask to go to church as a teenager.

Im an adult now and it’s been tugging on my heart for years to get closer with God and teach my kids about him too so they’re not clueless like me when they’re grown. I’m married , 26 years old , and have 4 kids ages 3-10 and I feel like it’s too late already to start 😫 I feel so bad thinking about the fact that my oldest is 10 years old and I have yet to raise her in a church like I wanted to since pregnant.

I’ve randomly picked up the Bible here and there but I don’t really understand it. It gets discouraging so I put it down and don’t try again for a few months. When I think about going to church I get discouraged because it’s embarrassing being 26 and not knowing anything about God at all. All I know is the story of Noah’s ark , someone parted a sea, and Adam and Eve. Literally children’s book stories thats it. I don’t know how to teach my kids if I don’t know myself. It’s just frustrating and discouraging feeling so stuck.

I strongly feel like my household needs God now more than ever. We’re slowly turning into the same angry household I was raised in. I’m so tired of the yelling everyday the cussing the negativity the no patience. It’s something I’ve brought to my husbands attention for a while and he doesn’t seem to care to work on it or his relationship with God. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A: Glad you reached out to get help and guidance. I do believe these can help you.

It's never to old to get right with God and start a relationship with Him. He created us to. I know folk who got saved at 90, 102 and 107! Everyone comes to Christ at different ages and all are at different places of growth and maturity in the faith. Everyone at church knows it so, no question is dumb or too simple to ask about. We are on the journey towards maturity and everyone at church who is saved will gladly help you, especially the teachers and leaders.

When you go to Sunday school let them know your new [and newly saved] so you know nothing much about the Bible yet.

A super quick summary of the Bible can be found here and this is another to understand. It will be a big help as a beginner.
