Is it sinful for females to have short hair?

Q: Is it a sin if as a female I cut my hair short?

A: It could be. We do have freedom in Christ but Scripture does say women are supposed to look like women. And it specifically mentions long hair.

Today what we see in USA, where many women have short hair, it was started and continued as a rebellious behavior trend of the unsaved in the 20s, 40s, 60s and continues through today (where we can easily identify unsaved/God hating liberals by their short hair but also many add unnatural hair colors).

However some women have cancer, or are balding, or might cut it short when they have very young kids to take up less time than putting it in a quick updo or bun and save on showering time; on the same note godly people of the past had 10 to 20 kids and those moms never cut their hair.

We do need to look at the reason and motives for a desire to do a thing such as hair styles and cuts. Just male sure you are not gratifying your fleshly desires by cutting your hair.

Here are some verses to help.

1 Timothy 2:9-10
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

Deuteronomy 22:5
“A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.

1 Corinthians 11:14-15
Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body

1 Peter 3:3-4 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious...For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves

Galatians 5:22-23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

1 Timothy 2:9
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire

Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

1 John 2:15-17: "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passes away, and its desire, but whoever does the will of God lives forever."

Philippians 2:15-16: "That you may be blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may boast that I have not run in vain or labored in vain."

1 Peter 2:9-12: "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, to proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world, not to be conformed to the passions of your former way of life, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy.'"

John 15:19: "If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you."

Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Leviticus 20:26: "You shall be holy to me, for I, the LORD, am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine."

Deuteronomy 7:6: "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth."

Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Romans 12:1: I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Romans 12:2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

Obedience and godly living given across Scripture does apply to believers today, because it is based on the principle.

The question we need to always ask is are we submitting to God or going our own way? How will this affect my witness to the world and will there be problems vaused among believers at church because of any decision I make?

Be prayerful in every situation and obedient to God and his will.
