Do teens need to go to church
Q: Do we need to go to Church as a Christian? I am a teen and I dont really grasp what the pastor talks about.
A: I felt the same way as a young teen. I had no idea what the pastor was talking about or why people listened to him so long. I used to just color or cuddle in my grandparents in the pews. When I was 12 I was determined to sit and understand what he was saying. So I really focused hardπͺπ. He spoke on the gospel ...and I got saved!
We should be in Church on Sunday because it is the gathering of believers. Your eternal family. The redeemed are brothers and sisters in Christ and we need to be with our spiritual family. We learn, grow, fellowship and do things together here. It is basically "as close to" Heaven as we can get right now. We are flawed people who all need love, grace and forgiveness. In Heaven it will be sin free but its as good as it gets anywhere on earth There π.
Sunday School is the place you need to be at so you can grow in understanding Scripture. You personally read the Bible during the week for growing in your relationship and fellowship with God., and do your Sunday lesson in advance to have a grasp of what theyll teach about. You can write questions down and either ask in class or email it to the teacher to get answers [ask his preference]. That combined helps you grow. From your daily Bible reading [if your parents are saved] you ask them questions about what you read. Or you can [also] use this app to help with faq and context about the section you are reading [studybible.org - click the verse and then the Resources button].
Sermons are bible studies that the pastor spent his week putting together [and also based on earlier learning in his life and college]... so we grasp the culture, history, what was going on then, symbology and shadows as related to Christ and teach us God's Word. Both verse by verse learning through a book and some topical sermons are typical in good churches. Sermons are like lectures to help benefit our spiritual growth and maturity in the faith. You can go online to listen to the sermon again to grasp it a bit more later in the week, thanks to modern technology.
You learn over time so as a teen you are taking in a lot but you take in a lot even at school. So meditate on what you do grasp from a sermon, and write down things the pastor said and verse locations in the sermon session, so you can review a bit of it when you get home. And when the church releases the sermon audio, go to a quiet place and listen to it. Sometimes it is loaded on Wednesdays π.
The worship service also has music
Hymns are sung in most biblical churches as they teach theology and have an application verse for us. Usually it talks about
1. GOD
2. The Father
3. Jesus
4. The Holy Spirit
5. Application for the believer.
*Most people were illiterate and wasnt only until about 1950s did people graduate to 8th grade. So what people learned was from Sermons and Songs.
They are still very loved and very valuable today π₯° because of the contents and new children growing up in the church generation to generation. It is important to know these songs. And it will build your faith.
If your church doesnt sing Hymns I highly recommend you listen to them during the week and on the drive to church. Here are some good ones (see link) . And here is a hymnal you can own, to go through and see the theology.
If it is not related to sermons and you just want to know why you need to be in Church or youth group then the question is why aren't you going?
If it is transportation related then find someone at the church who can commit to carpool you; either from Sunday School, Youth group, or among the decons or someone they recommend who lives near you.
If it is cuz of sports or laziness to get up then you need to reprioritize your life if you claim to love Christ.
The church isnt a dry boring place. It is a joyful blessed place and basically is as close as we get to heaven on earth. It is where we meet our eternal family; brothers and sisters in Christ, and join together to worship God, take the Lord's Supper remembrance, witness baptisms, fellowship, love one another, serve one another and Christ, and learn and get equipped and can ask questions and get counsel, and give to God and for missionaries and to help the church run. And more. Scripture tells us and chastises those who are not assembling together with the local congregation.
If you have had a bad experience or trauma there then seek biblical counseling & help so you can overcome it and then find a biblical church. We live in a sin stained world and it is full of suffering but also forgiveness and love (among believers).
Here are important things to know about why Church matters.
Here are resources for growing believers; there's a teen section there too that will help you live the Christian life.
Hope that helps ππ
