Music questions
Q: I’ve been struggling to let go of listening to secular music. I dont listen to rap or pop music anymore but I find it so hard to stop listening to musicals and Disney soundtracks (I have a 3 year old and i like to show her the songs i grew up on). I’m a big musical girly I know all the broadway songs, la la land, you name it. I haven’t felt any conviction there but then again... I could just be ignoring it, I really don’t know. I know we’re not supposed to listen to secular music so I’m curious if you have any tips or can share how you stopped listening to secular music I would really appreciate it.
A: It comes down to discernment and maturity in the faith.
As to the stuff you have shared/let your kids listen to, it's best to not guide them to that music, because it leads them from godly thinking, they're impressionable. Weed those out. It's far better for them to sing Scripture and hymns than worldly music, so you can educate them in the Word.
I think there could be some, few, secular music or non Christian music we as adults listen to. I used to listen to foreign music (that I don't know lyrics to because it sounds nice). There's also some music that's older which is clean and not about sin.
However keep in mind the secular music is made in sin since the unsaved only sin. But there is a liberty aspect here so just be cautious. Pick apart the lyrics in your languages and spot the unholy, unbiblical lies, and idolatry and avoid those. Also, [take as a tip] with some much good Christian music today, why would we spend much if any time in the realm of worldly music? It's a joy and glorifies God if we sing songs about our Savior and biblical truth.
